Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Social Sciences of ENU. after LN Gumilev invites you to attend a course of lectures of a visiting Professor of University of Exeter (UK) Nelly Bekus-Goncharova. Theme of the course: ” Paradigm of “nationalizing state” in the post-Soviet space.” Lectures will be held from 12 to 23 May 2014 in aud. №215 (FSS building). Lectures time: 10:00 – 13:00.

May 12, 2014 – Introduction. Main categories and their definition. Nation, national identity, nation-state. Cultural and political implications of understanding and demarcation of “nation” in national versus nationalistic. Primordialist and instrumentalist approaches. Defining the status of nation in objective and/or subjective order. Contructivism and ethno-symbolism in understanding the process of nation-formation.

May 13, 2014 – Nation in Eastern European and Eurasian specifics; Herder’s cultural-linguistic articulation of nationalist ideology Nations and Empires: overview of the Russian Empire in general, nationalities issues in the empire, and Marxism.

May 14, 2014 – Contested interpretations of the Soviet national policy and Soviet nationalities phenomenon. Miroslav Hroch. Small nations’ nationalism. Phrase D in nation-building: Soviet case.

May 15, 2014 – Faces of Soviet nationalities policy: ethnofederalism and nation-building versus national repression and russification. Matrioshka-nationalism. Soviet nationalities and Modernization theory; R.G. Suny. Terry Martin. Institutionalist approach to nation-building.

May 20, 2014 – Religion as an intrument of national . Specifics of the Islamic regions of the former USSR; role of Orthodox church.

May 21, 2014 – National identity and memory narrative. Nations as remembering collectives. Morice Halbwachs. Piere Nora.

May 22, 2014 – Reification of nation. Role of the state in cultivating national identity through various sites of nationalization: commemorations, festivals, schools, and urban landscapes.

May 23, 2014 – Capital cities as an instrument of national performative state. Postcolonial, post-Soviet, postsocialist, postmodern. Changing role of the discourse of nationalism in post-national era.
